| Jobs | Helpful Skills |
| Captain | This is a licensed position and, if not required legally, usually insurance companies will require a license. |
| Mate | Some years of experience and knowledge of navigation, marlinspike seamanship, basic engineering, life saving and CPR. |
| Engineer | This is fast becoming a licensed position. One needs to know diesel and gas engines with a good knowledge of refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems. Fire fighting is a must. |
| Chef | Needs to know how to cook for a lot of people usually in a small space, some basic accounting, proper food storage and provisioning skills. Increasing preference for culinary training or catering. |
| Stew | Good interpersonal skills in addition to fine food service, bartending, chambermaid, and detailed cleaning of expensive surfaces. Napkin folding, flower arrangement, table decoration and concierge skills may also be needed. |
| Deck Hand | Line handling, basic seamanship, outboard handling with some paint and varnish skills. |
| Other | There are other jobs on some large yachts such as nurse, helicopter pilot, masseur/masseuse and nanny. These require appropriate technical skills and licenses. |
